Peo's Homemade Oreos

Contributed by Alley Rasband

These are the best homemade Oreos. I have been experimenting with different frosting flavors. I will list buttercream and peanut butter as optional fillings below, but any frosting would work.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 2 boxes chocolate cake mix (devil’s food brand is our fav)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups shortening

For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

  • 18oz cream cheese
  • ½ cup butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

For the Peanut Butter Frosting:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup smooth peanut butter
  • 2 Tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla

Directions

For the Cookies:

  1. Set oven to bake at 375 F
  2. Mix boxes of cake mix, eggs, and shortening together in a mixer. It looks like it won’t be enough liquid, but it will work.
  3. Once it’s well mixed, pull off a nickel to quarter-sized pieces and roll into a ball. Place on a lined cookie sheet with equidistant spacing.
  4. Bake for 8 minutes or until the cookies crack on top.
  5. Let them cool on the cookie sheet for at least 5 minutes before removing. At this point, I like to smoosh them flatter with the bottom of a cup. It’s not necessary, but allows for an authentic Oreo experience if the cookie isn’t poofy in the middle and is instead equally flat across the cookie.

For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

  1. Mix cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla together with hand mixer.
  2. Use silicon spatula (or similar) to spread frosting onto a cooled cookie.
  3. Find a similar sized cookie to add on top.

For the Peanut Butter Frosting:

  1. Mix powdered sugar, butter, smooth peanut butter, milk, and vanilla together with a hand mixer.
  2. Use silicon spatula (or similar) to spread frosting onto a cooled cookie.
  3. Find a similar sized cookie to add on top.

Notes

*Note: If you want to use both the buttercream and peanut butter frosting, you can halve both recipes.

**Note: These cookies are best on the second day, cold! So, after you make them, put them in the fridge and enjoy the next day.

***Note: This recipe makes so many individual cookies. Total prep time, cook time, and cookie counts are estimated.
